      <image:caption>Change in overthinking usually starts with recognizing when the system is activated, before responding to whatever the thought is asking you to do. A few shifts that tend to help: Noticing the body first. When the loop starts, check what's happening physically. Heart rate, breathing, muscle tension. The body's response often precedes the thought spiral by a few seconds and catching it early creates a small window for a different response. Slowing the reassurance loop. If you notice you've asked your partner the same question (in slightly different forms) more than once, that's information. It usually means the system is seeking, not that the answer has actually changed. Pausing before asking again, even for ten minutes, sometimes shifts the pattern. Tolerating a small amount of uncertainty on purpose. This is uncomfortable but powerful. Instead of resolving every uncertain feeling immediately, sitting with it for five or ten minutes teaches the system that uncertainty doesn't have to be eliminated to be survivable. Recognizing that the thought isn't the problem. The thought is the system's attempt to manage what's underneath. Treating the thought as urgent often reinforces the loop. Treating it as a signal from a stressed system creates more space. Working with the body, not against it. Movement, slower breathing, warmth, and physical grounding all reduce the stress response more reliably than thinking does. The thoughts often quiet when the body settles, not before.</image:caption>

A few shifts that tend to help: For the partner who pursues, slowing down the pace of the conversation. Fewer questions, more space, less pressure to resolve immediately. The shutdown often eases when the pressure does. For the partner who withdraws, naming what's happening in their body, even briefly. "I'm starting to feel overwhelmed and I need a minute" gives the other person information instead of leaving them to interpret silence. This is hard to do mid-conversation which is why practicing the language during calm moments matters. For both partners, agreeing on a way to pause that doesn't feel like abandonment. A break that includes a clear time to come back ("Can we take twenty minutes and pick this back up?") is different from one person walking away indefinitely. The first protects both people. The second usually triggers more of the pattern. Over time, the goal is not to eliminate the pattern entirely. It's to recognize it earlier, respond to it differently, and build enough understanding of what's underneath that the cycle has less power to escalate. This is the kind of work I focus on in relationship counseling and in individual therapy, particularly for the partner who wants to understand their part of the pattern even when their partner isn't ready to come in.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Resources - Why You and Your Partner Keep Having the Same Argument - What the recurring fight is actually about What looks like a disagreement about something small is usually part of a larger pattern. One person brings something up. The other becomes defensive, shuts down, or wants space. The more one person pushes to talk, the more the other pulls away. Some couples notice this pursue and withdraw pattern clearly. Others both push, leading to fights that escalate fast. Others both avoid, which creates a different problem, tension that never gets named but slowly accumulates. Research on couples' communication has identified this dynamic, often called demand-withdraw, as one of the most destructive patterns in couples', reliably linked to lower conflict resolution and higher levels of anger, sadness, and fear during disagreements.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Underneath every version of this is the same dynamic. For one person, the moment may feel like not being important or not being heard. For the other, it may feel like criticism or not being enough. These reactions are shaped by past experiences, current stress, and how safe the relationship feels in that moment. Even when both people care deeply, the pattern keeps going because each reaction triggers the next one. In my work with couples across Rhode Island and Connecticut, the recurring argument loop is one of the most common patterns I see. It almost never has to do with the topic on the surface.</image:caption>
